"Coppafeel" - an awesome charity raising awareness of Breast Cancer

Apparently 1 in 8 women will experience Breast Cancer in their lifetime. And 400 men are diagnosed every year. Scary stats.

In the last 18 months alone I have known a close family member and also a dear friend, a similar age to me, for whom Breast Cancer has been/is a reality. The physical battle, practical considerations, worry, anguish, uncertainty and downright in-equitability of it all is hard.

After I had researched online as much as I could to reach a level of comprehension of the medical/technical side of the disease, I read some articles to in some way try to best equip myself to help and not say or do the wrong thing. Unfortunately, I think probably however hard you try you are bound at some point to make a mistake, but at least if you try that is the best you can do. An interesting thing that I learned, when I was trying to understand an approach I was struggling with, was that was that it was not my illness. And if my loved one decided she preferred to deal with it in her own way, well I should respect that whilst trying to make sure she knew I was there for her and trust that she would/will talk when she is ready. And of course this may not be to me. I thought I would share that little tip because in a sea of information, worry, emotion and opinions, I found it illuminating. My loved one will undoubtedly read this, I hope I got it right.

Given that Breast Cancer has indirectly featured in my life recently, the charity “Coppafeel” really strikes a very strong chord. This is their description of what they do, taken from their website:

“We’re on a mission to stamp out late detection of breast cancer. We ensure that you know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, know what your boobs look and feel like normally, check your boobs regularly throughout your lifetime and have the confidence to see a doctor if you notice anything that doesn’t feel right for you”.

and there is a great video to watch as well as plenty of other information.

…So, do you have boobs? well then sign up for their monthly text Boob Check Reminder so that you don’t forget to “coppafeel” of yourself! …and why don’t you send off for a shower sticker as well.

Do it now, you have nothing to lose!
