Scoop & Stack Ice Cream Cone playset review (Melissa & Doug) from Magic Fairy Wings

My sister's children are quite a few years older than mine so she has a special "Auntie sense" when it comes to great gift ideas. A while ago she bought my daughter a plastic ice cream set and she was spot on as usual (my 3-year-old loved it) but, sadly, the toy itself didn't stand the test of time. The ice cream balls no longer fit on the cones and we also lost pieces.

So when the online toy store Magic Fairy Wings sent me a Scoop & Stack Ice Cream Cone playset (Melissa & Doug) for review I was very keen to test it out as a potential replacement. This is a beautiful set and it doesn't disappoint.

It comes with two wooden ice cream cones, two ice cream scoopers with wooden handles and four scoops of ice cream. Having two scoopers is great because it means my two children can play alongside each other, or with a friend,  and not argue about taking turns.

There are four different flavours of ice cream to make different combination: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and mint chocolate chip.

The old plastic set just doesn't compare!

How does the Scoop & Stack work?

The scoopers and the icecreams have magnets in them. The child picks up the ice cream with the scooper and then presses a lever to release it onto the cone. It's so simple and a great concept.

My son, aged 5, worked it out straight away. But my daughter, who is younger,  needed a few attempts before she got it. I didn't have to step in to help though - she eventually worked it out for herself and was very pleased.

This set is a great way for children to learn through play. It helps them with hand eye co-ordination, fine motor skills, co-operation, manners, counting, pattern making and imagination.

Playtime!

My daughter's toy kitchen is one of the most played with toys in our house and the Scoop & Stack Ice Cream set is the perfect addition. We turned the kitchen around and they played ice cream shops for ages! It was nice to watch.

My daughter spent the rest of the afternoon asking, "Mummy which flavour would you like? Mint? Oh sorry we are out of mint but I can do chocolate and strawberry." It was very sweet.

The pieces are well made and sturdy so I think the Scoop & Stack will be around in our house for a very long time. It is suitable from the age of 3 and would make a very nice and impressive gift for any child up to 6 years I think.

Storage

The set comes with a strong plastic tub for the ice cream to be stored in. Not only is this really handy but it also looks good and adds to the fun of play.

As a bonus for me, the whole set fits perfectly into the shelf compartment of our IKEA kitchen. This makes tidy time much easier and gets my seal of approval!

The price

The Scoop & Stack Ice Cream Cone Playset is available from Magic Fairy Wings for the RRP of £19.99.

(Please ask the store for delivery prices outside the UK).
